One in Every Five Carriers is at Risk of an FMCSA Intervention Through CSA 2010

A ratio of 1 in five carriers are at risk of an intervention under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's new methodology for appraising safety measures under CSA 2010. This is in accordance to Rair Technologies' analysis of safety performance. They also found that carriers are most likely to get unsatisfactory result in the Fatigued Driving Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Category, or BASIC, no matter what the size is.

To understand the impact of the new CSA 2010 SMS methodology, Rair currently evaluated safety performance of more than 60,000 fleets.

According to the technology services provider, they found that under the new procedure, the smallest fleets (1-5 vehicles), saw their risk of intervention grow from 10 to 15 percent. The largest fleets (more than 500 vehicles), on the other hand, saw their risk decrease from 72 to 42 percent.

Rair also reveals that while fleets are most likely to be weak in the Fatigue Driving category, Vehicle Maintenance and Unsafe Driving were the secondary and tertiary most problematic categories.

Furthermore, the chance of being inadequate in the Crash Indicator and Unsafe Driving BASICs decreased extremely for all but the small fleets, with 15 and lesser vehicles. It is these two BASICs that the smallest fleets are significantly vulnerable to. The risk of deficiency in the Improper Loading BASIC fell considerably across all fleet sizes.

FMCSA is presenting individual commercial motor carrier companies a preview of their safety rankings under CSA 2010 to give carriers a clear assessment of their over-the-road performance through the seven CSA 2010 Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs), starting Monday, August 16.

The seven CSA 2010 Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs) are:

  • Unsafe Driving

  • Fatigued Driving (Hours-of-Service)

  • Driver Fitness

  • Controlled Substances/Alcohol

  • Vehicle Maintenance

  • Cargo-Related

  • Crash Indicator

Carriers deadline to preview their safety performance data and deal with any alarming behaviors that can lead to crashes and fatalities on our roadways is on Dec 5, the national roll out of CSA2010.
